Time to Elect a King.

2 07 2024

On July 4th 2024, the UK goes to the polls to choose who’ll govern us for the next five years. You’d be forgiven for thinking that nothing will ever change – that they’re all in it for themselves and that there’s no point in engaging with the process.

Hardly surprising really, the last 14 years have revealed just how self-serving the “political elite” can be when they become emboldened by the lack of proper scrutiny or accountability.

A supine broadcast media, in the case of the BBC largely because they are always terrified of the consequences of upsetting those who control whether their Charter is renewed, doesn’t help.

Newspapers (who reads them these days?) controlled mostly by offshore moguls whose only interest is in manipulating the levers of power behind the scenes are the plant-based media’s version of echo chambers for their audience.

What’s needed is to break the stranglehold of vested interests and start electing people who don’t give a stuff about the existing power structures and trample roughshod over conventional ideas of who our politicians should be.

In the Salisbury constituency there’s an option to do just that.

Step forward, King Arthur Uther Pendragon. Leader of the Loyal Arthurian Warband, Druid and environmental campaigner since before it became fashionable, and a firebrand who has been a thorn in the side of “The Authorities” for decades.

Loud, annoying and surprisingly effective at raising the profile of causes that may otherwise be ignored, Arthur’s nothing like the usual herd of career politicians.

Ex-Army, ex-biker, once photographed defying the bailiffs and a bloke with a chainsaw at the top of a tree during the 3rd Battle of Newbury while protesting against the bypass.

He’s stood  an independent in every Parliamentary election in Salisbury since 2010, without the backing of any party machinery and supported only by grass-roots contributions.

As Prof. Ronald Hutton once put it, in “The Trials of Arthur” (ISBN 0-00-712114-8):

“A contemporary historian has therefore, to take Arthur Pendragon seriously. Upon the one hand he is a major figure in modern Druidry, leading one of the largest orders and representing a distinctive form of spirituality. On the other, he has an equally important place in the history of groups concerned with environmental issues and civil rights. It is an impressive dual achievement.”

A measure of the strength of the existing political system is that Arthur has mysteriously failed to be invited to a large number of the Hustings events held in the constituency.

The last thing the “ruling class” want is some independent-minded chap showing up and speaking uncomfortable truths it seems.

If we’re all content to carry on as we are, feeling powerless and shrugging our shoulders as Parliament becomes ever less relevant to the daily struggles of the public then fine.

If instead we think that it’s time for a change, then – at least in Salisbury – we get the chance to do it differently and elect a King.

THOUSANDS gathered at Stonehenge to celebrate the first sunrise after the winter solstice.

23 12 2017

Thousands of people gathered at Stonehenge to witness the sunrise on the shortest day of the year in the northern hemisphere.

Crowds arrived at the Wiltshire landmark before dawn with many others travelling to the Avebury stone circle, which is also in the county.

The winter solstice marks the point when the North Pole is tilted 23.5 degrees away from the sun.

The solstice occurred at 04:49 GMT, with the sun rising at 08:04.

Pagans and druids dressed in traditional clothing joined families and a choir to mark the end of the longest night of the year.

Thick cloud at the prehistoric site in Wiltshire meant the sunrise, at 8.10am, was not visible.

Kate Davies, of English Heritage, said: “We were delighted to welcome approximately 5,000 people to Stonehenge to celebrate winter solstice this morning.

“It was an enjoyable and peaceful celebration despite the damp weather and it was great to see so many families enjoying the music and chanting around the monument.

Druid Protester King Arthur Pendragon granted Stonehenge ‘pay to pray’ court date.

10 01 2017

Senior druid Arthur Pendragon has been told he can take English Heritage to court to challenge “pay to pray” car parking charges at Stonehenge.

King Arthur Pendragon believes the £15 parking fee at Stonehenge was “an illegal charge” A senior druid has been told he can take English Heritage to court to challenge “pay to pray” car parking charges at Stonehenge. King Arthur Pendragon argued a parking fee of £15 for the 2016 summer solstice breached his human rights. Parking at the Neolithic monument, managed by English Heritage (EH), usually costs £5. A judge at Salisbury County Court granted Mr Pendragon a full hearing at a small claims court.

He told the judge at the allocation hearing that the claim was not about money or costs, but the fact it “unfairly targeted his religion”. An estimated 23,000 people attended the Neolithic site in 2015 compared to 12,000 in 2016 The increased charge was introduced to encourage more people to car share or travel by bus, but Mr Pendragon said he wanted to prove EH was wrong to turn him away when he refused to “pay to pray”. A spokeswoman for EH said: “This was a procedural hearing establishing the next steps and we look forward to presenting our full case at a later date. “As legal proceedings are ongoing it…

Mr Pendragon asked that the date for the full hearing does not clash with the spring or summer solstice.

Stonehenge lit up ‘will make it theme park’ claims Druid

4 12 2011

Lighting up Stonehenge at night would turn it into a “theme park”, says a senior Druid.

Lady Mimi Pakenham from Warminster sparked the idea of illuminating the stones to “really display them” in a letter to a national newspaper.

Stonehenge was lit up at night for a period in the 1970s and early 1980s

Senior Druid, King Arthur Pendragon, said it would “detract from the very purpose of Stonehenge”.

English Heritage, which manages the site, said it could be a distraction for nearby traffic.

Lady Pakenham, who raised the idea on the letters pages of the Times, said lights would give the monument dignity.

“I can’t understand why they haven’t at least done a trial run of very subtle lighting,” she said.

“I think very soft illumination, sort of like moonlight, for a few hours in the evening would really display it far more than it is now – where it’s looking rather abandoned.

“It’s all fenced in like a concentration camp, so soft lights for a few hours in the dark of the night – it would actually be the real jewel in England’s wonderful, wonderful monuments and buildings.”

‘Dark and broody’

King Arthur Pendragon, battle chieftain of the Council of British Druid Orders, said: “The place is supposed to be dark and broody – that’s part of the mysticism of Stonehenge – and illuminating it would only detract from its very purpose as a sun temple.

“It’s not designed to be illuminated at night and in my opinion it smacks of theme park Stonehenge which is everything I stand against.”

According to English Heritage, Stonehenge was lit up at night for a period in the 1970s and early 1980s.

“But that practice was stopped due to an increase in road accidents caused by vehicles slowing down to observe the monument,” said a spokesperson.

“As there is even more traffic today on the A303, that risk cannot be ignored.”
